Kaldi and the Dancing Goats

The Ethiopian legend that gave coffee its first story, and what it still tells us about discovery at origin.

Every coffee culture keeps an origin story. Ethiopia's is the oldest and the most repeated: a goatherd named Kaldi noticed his animals refusing to sleep after eating the bright cherries of a certain shrub.

What matters in the legend is not whether it happened. It is that discovery at origin has always belonged to the people who work the land — the farmers, the pickers, the families who learned which cherries were ready and which were not.

That is the same knowledge the specialty trade depends on today, and the same knowledge that is too often left out of the price.
